{"id":359,"date":"2007-10-09T21:46:51","date_gmt":"2007-10-09T20:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tinyplanetblog.com\/?p=359"},"modified":"2007-10-09T21:46:51","modified_gmt":"2007-10-09T20:46:51","slug":"artificial-lifes-looking-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tinyplanetblog.com\/?p=359","title":{"rendered":"Artificial life&#039;s looking good"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The announcement of artificial life could be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/science\/2007\/oct\/06\/genetics.climatechange\" target=\"_blank\">just weeks away<\/a>, a synthetic chromosone inserted into a living cell.<\/p>\n<p>Not only is this an extraordinary scientific breakthrough, it could be of enormous help weaning ourselves off oil &#8212; at least, that&#8217;s according to Dr Ari Patrinos.<\/p>\n<p>He told <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/earth2tech.com\/2007\/10\/09\/how-artificial-life-could-re-energize-the-planet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Earth2Tech<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a designer organism could be developed to only perform certain tasks, like converting sugar to ethanol, which would result in a very efficient process. Natural microbes have other life priorities, like replication, he says, but a synthetic organism can be created to just perform one function.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This could happen within 10 years and produced &#8220;significant&#8221; amounts of friendly fuels.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m quite giddy at the prospect of artificial life, let alone the benefits it could bring in the fight against climate change. I&#8217;ve mused in the past about how science could help us to help ourselves, and this looks like more good news in that regard.<\/p>\n<p>That said, any biological work comes with a risk of unforeseen consequences. Will mutations scupper this promising enterprise?
