{"id":411,"date":"2007-10-31T03:52:57","date_gmt":"2007-10-31T02:52:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tinyplanetblog.com\/?p=411"},"modified":"2007-10-31T03:52:57","modified_gmt":"2007-10-31T02:52:57","slug":"green-google","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tinyplanetblog.com\/?p=411","title":{"rendered":"Green Google"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Google<\/strong> aims to produce 50 megawatts of electricity <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com\/8301-10784_3-9807330-7.html\" target=\"_blank\">by 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To put it in context, Ireland&#8217;s biggest power station, Moneypoint, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esb.ie\/main\/about_esb\/powerstations\/moneypoint\/environment\/policy.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">produces 855 megawatts<\/a> and is supposed to be able to cater for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esb.ie\/main\/about_esb\/powerstations\/moneypoint\/thestation\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">40% of the country&#8217;s needs<\/a> (although the claim is made on the <strong>ESB<\/strong> website, a spokeswoman recently said it produces 800 megawatts, <a href=\"http:\/\/home.eircom.net\/content\/irelandcom\/topstories\/11350671?view=Eircomnet\" target=\"_blank\">or 25% of Ireland&#8217;s demand<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s an aside. <strong>Google<\/strong> going green makes sense &#8212; if it can produce its own power it will increase its independence, limit the risk of blackouts on the main grid, have energy sources close to its centres and, just as importantly, will garner further goodwill.<\/p>\n<p>Data centres in particular gulp down electricity, so it is a sound strategy to have the power source as nearby as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it will help fuel the <strong>Google<\/strong> global conquest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mulley.net\/2007\/10\/30\/the-future-free-pcs-and-broadband-from-google\" target=\"_blank\">that Damien has predicted<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google aims to produce 50 megawatts of electricity by 2012.
