{"id":420,"date":"2007-11-10T21:48:34","date_gmt":"2007-11-10T20:48:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tinyplanetblog.com\/?p=420"},"modified":"2007-11-10T21:48:34","modified_gmt":"2007-11-10T20:48:34","slug":"microsoft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tinyplanetblog.com\/?p=420","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whythawk over on <strong>Scholars &amp; Rogues<\/strong> has written an interesting piece <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scholarsandrogues.com\/2007\/11\/10\/investment-as-usual-microsoft-facebook-and-the-strategy-of-business\/\" target=\"_blank\">on <strong>Microsoft&#8217;s<\/strong> business strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He points out that while the computer desktop &#8220;may have gone into a terminal holding pattern&#8221;, gaming and social networking have exploded (<em>Halo 3<\/em> has made the computing giant a fortune, while its investment in <strong>Facebook<\/strong> shows how the established business players are flocking to get a piece of the rising action).<\/p>\n<p>But the passage I liked best was the explanation for why Vista hasn&#8217;t taken off:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With each iteration [of Windows] <strong>Microsoft<\/strong> learned and improved.  When XP came out it all seemed to come together.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to mock <strong>Microsoft<\/strong>, but it\u2019s just as easy to mock <strong>Toyota <\/strong>or <strong>Hyundai <\/strong>or any of the motor manufacturers that aim squarely in the middle-market. If you\u2019re a super-geek (Linux) or super-artiste (<strong>Apple<\/strong>) then Microsoft seems very middle-class.<\/p>\n<p>But 90% of the work I do (and most office-workers) is word-processing and spreadsheets. I haven\u2019t needed a faster machine or better office package since 2001. I still use my same version of Office and XP from then. It\u2019s stable and more than sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>Many people felt the same way.  Hence the rather hum-drum response to Vista.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Agree of disagree?
