{"id":84,"date":"2007-06-12T19:07:27","date_gmt":"2007-06-12T18:07:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tinyplanetblog.com\/?p=84"},"modified":"2007-06-12T19:07:27","modified_gmt":"2007-06-12T18:07:27","slug":"hypocrisy-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tinyplanetblog.com\/?p=84","title":{"rendered":"Hypocrisy in action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns says Iran is <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20070612\/ap_on_re_mi_ea\/iran_taliban;_ylt=AiMhbFSeghAdNBOddSwLd3NvaA8F\" target=\"_blank\">sending weapons<\/a> to the Taliban. It is the first time (to my knowledge) a senior American official has made such a claim.<\/p>\n<p>The likes of Tony Blair have said &#8220;elements&#8221; within the Iranian regime were sending arms to Afghanistan, but this looks like a direct accusation against the government as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>What really gets to me though is that the US is busy <a href=\"http:\/\/examiner.ie\/irishexaminer\/pages\/story.aspx-qqqg=sport-qqqm=sport-qqqa=sport-qqqid=34841-qqqx=1.asp\" target=\"_blank\">arming Sunni Arab groups<\/a> to fight al-Qaida in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(Iran is)\u00a0 a country that&#8217;s trying to flex its muscles,&#8221; Burns said, &#8220;but in a way that&#8217;s injurious to the interests of just about everybody else in the world. I think it&#8217;s a major miscalculation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And how the US flexes its muscles is in everybody&#8217;s best interests? Arming militants to fight militants is a perfect calculation?<\/p>\n<p>Iran has denied aiding the Taliban, saying it makes no sense for a Shi&#8217;ite regime to back a Sunni group.<\/p>\n<p>With patience already frayed on both sides regarding Iran&#8217;s nuclear program, Burns&#8217; comments are only adding fuel to the fire.
