The UCC vote on stem cell research was passed 16-15. The pro-life campaigners are up in arms. I wonder if that referendum plan will ever get off the ground; I doubt it.

Stem cells at Cork university
It looks like University College Cork will be the first institution in Ireland to allow the use of embryonic stem cells for research. According to a report in the Evening Echo, a local paper in Cork, the university president is in favour of it.
“The advantage to hunmanity offered by the use of embryonic cells in research over-rides any argument against it. This research is taking place in universities the world over. If we are to remain cutting-edge scientists in Ierland, to compete with other international universities in being successful, this research is essential.”
The governing body votes on the plan on Tuesday.

Sounding the economic death knells

Ireland’s was the first eurozone economy to slip into recession this year, figures showed on Thursday, as the bursting of a property bubble ended 25 years of sustained growth in the once mighty ”Celtic Tiger”.
Official data from the country’s Central Statistics Office showed gross domestic product (GDP) fell for the second successive quarter in the three months to end-June, the technical definition of economic recession.
I thought we were already in a recession, but hey, what do I know?

The two children who died in Saturday’s murder-suicide in Wexford were dead in their beds before the fire that gutted the house in Clonroche broke out, it was confirmed last night.
Postmortems revealed Mark, 6, and Julie, 5, may have been poisoned or suffocated by their father who shot himself in the head after shooting his wife.
Conclusive autopsy reports will take weeks, but I’m not sure we’ll ever know exactly why Diarmuid Flood took such horrific action.
