Music, eh?

Huffington Post has a playlist up of the top 50 No 1 singles in the UK over the past decade. A quick flick through it tells me that A) they’re for the most part crap and B) my taste in music is well outside the mainstream. It’s also put me in a wistful mood, so I’m going to have to go through the iPod and dig up some old favourites, like this one:

Green Day know their enemy

My favourite band have released their new single, “Know Your Enemy”, and I quite like it. It’s catchy, although it’s not one of their best tracks. In all likelihood it will need to be heard in the context of the album as a whole, as it’s another rock opera/concept-type album. Regardless, I’m looking forward to 21st Century Breakdown being released next month. As if I wouldn’t buy it. Greenday.com says you can buy the single here, but I don’t know if that works for non-US readers.

Letter From Belgium

Alan is putting out some really good ambient-style music and other bits and pieces that don’t quite fit with Hooray For Humans. He’s also on MySpace here and here.

Now, if you’ll excuse me I’m a hair’s breadth away from utter exhaustion so I blogging will be very light over the next few days.

Bidding farewell to Yma

Yma Sumac, the near legendary singer who claimed to have been descended from Incan royalty, has died in Los Angeles. All sorts of stories surrounded Yma, who had an incredible and peculiar vocal range. Here’s one video of her; I’ll see if I can find some more stuff later.
