A Stormtrooper straight from the Star Wars films invaded the high court in London today.
The sinister figure stood glaring towards the judge as a multi-million pound battle began over the costumes used in the series of sci-fi films which chronicled intergalactic wars.
George Lucas, the creator of the films, is suing prop designer Andrew Ainsworth who made the first helmets and suits for the original 1977 film and is now selling replicas made at his studio in Twickenham, south west London.
The subprime mortgage crisis is likely to mean losses of $945bn worldwide. It comes as house prices in Ireland return to realistic levels, at least according to the governor of the Central Bank, who is ignoring an IMF claim that the market is still 30% overvalued. (Incidentally, the mortgage loss report is also from the IMF). But I wonder: given the subprime fallout, will an Irish bank ever want to give me a mortgage?
French newspaper Le Monde is cutting about 130 jobs, including a quarter of its journalists. Or rather, management wants to shed the jobs; the journalists have a sizable stake and could veto the plan. It lost E20m in 2007 and has debt of about E150m, despite growing its circulation to more than 310,000, which is twice that of Ireland’s biggest-circulating newspaper, the Irish Independent. It’s a fair sight bigger than UAE papers too.
Celtic have lost again, pretty much ending their chances of winning the league (yeah, like that was going to happen this season). I’m not calling for Gordon Strachan’s head: he has delivered silverware in previous years. I really don’t see where the club goes from here. It just doesn’t have the solidness of that which played under Martin O’Neill, despite some decent enough investment. Perhaps a new scouting structure is in order.
It’s a mantra I need right now.
